As part of annual worldwide francophonie celebrations, and as an exercise in outreach towards schools, on 25 April, the French Subject Area within the Department of Languages and Humanities in Education (DLHE) at the Faculty of Education held a prize-giving ceremony at the University of Malta in connection with a colour-themed poster competition it organised for Primary Grade 6 learners of French following a FLAP (Foreign Language Awareness Programme) course or its equivalent.
Learners were encouraged to explore the significance of colours in French culture and language expressions. DLHE students of the French Subject Area chose the winning posters. Certificates and books offered by the Cultural Service within the Embassy of France in Malta were awarded to the nine best entries. Primary school learners and their parents and teachers present for the ceremony were addressed by several speakers who stressed the importance of learning foreign languages.
A presentation was delivered on the Better Learning using Technologies project undertaken by the DLHE in collaboration with MITA, to enhance language learning through technology. Learners present for the prize-giving ceremony also participated in an engaging word game from which their first impressions of different foreign languages emerged.
