The Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences (MaKS) is launching a short course in Introduction to Audio Production for the Non-Musician.
Course description
This course will introduce learners to the theory and practice behind audio production and sound design. The course is intended to introduce a wide spectrum of audio production and sound design principles, exploring the intermedia relationships between sound and the visual media - from animation to art installations, performance, web interfaces to motion graphics, gaming, video and film. In this introductory-level course, learners shall gain familiarity with the basic tools and techniques of audio production, sound design and the technology behind it, together with a general conceptual and historical understanding of the role of sound as a media.
The course is geared to individuals who have no prior experience working with audio, and are seeking to improve their skills in this area. Furthermore no musical background is required to attend this course. The course is specially designed for individuals who come in contact with audio production in their work/studies/research but never had the opportunity to explore it further such as in filmmaking and audio visual production, game design, marketing, the visual arts and experimental practices.
This course shall take a hands-on approach, using the popular free Digital Audio Workstation Garage Band. Garage Band is available on Mac OSX and iOS platforms; however the techniques and approaches used shall be applicable to any Digital Audio Workstation.
Learning outcomes
The course is designed to give learners the tools and skills to develop their own audio projects; ranging from pure sonic projects (music, sound art) to sound tracks for video, interactive systems, interface design and sound design for web, digital games and other media.
Learners will gain basic proficiency in audio production, postproduction, mixing and mastering, digital signal processing, sound synthesis and sound interaction, together with technical proficiency in basic sound recording and live/ studio set-ups. Upon completion learners shall obtain a basic level of understanding of Digital Audio Workstations. Learners shall also be introduced to the historical and theoretical underpinnings of contemporary audio practice. A certificate of attendance will be awarded to each student at the end of the course.
