Dr Maria Cassar, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Nursing, and Ms Adrienne Grech, a Masters graduate in Nursing Studies, recently presented a paper at the University of Cambridge during the 27th International Networking for Healthcare Education Conference.
The paper, 'Beyond teaching and learning: Virtual learning platforms' sought to debate the twinned opportunity of using virtual learning platforms across both research and education purposes. With reference to a research study carried out by the presenters, challenges and advantages associated with the use of virtual leaning platforms, run by educational institutions, for research purposes (rather than exclusive teaching purposes) were identified. The authors determine a number of recommendations which educators and researchers may consider at an individual and institutional level in their respective roles as educators and researchers.
In the referred research study, MOODLE, the virtual learning platform (VLE) of the University of Malta was used for data collection. Dr Cassar and Ms Grech heartily thank the IT Services of the University of Malta for their sterling support and guidance throughout the entire research exercise when using MOODLE.
