In November 2016, a call for Walking Ambassadors was issued by the Green Travel Plan Coordinator within the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development.
Four members of staff within University of Malta applied and became officially recognized University of Malta Walking Ambassadors.
Raphael Mizzi, the Green Travel Plan Coordinator at the University of Malta organised a meeting at the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development. Present at the meeting were Jelena Agranov, Carlos Canas Canz, Carmel J Caruana and Lalit Garg. The vision is that the University will, over time, develop its tailored walking policies with the collaboration of the University of Malta Walking Ambassadors.
During the meeting a good number of suggestions were highlighted. Walking Ambassadors can start by becoming points of reference for advice and information and encourage other University of Malta members to walk. Finding safe walking routes to/from University has been identified as an important first task.
University of Malta Walking Ambassadors will support the University’s efforts to implement Green Travel and help reduce the number of cars driving to and from the University, with the ultimate aim of reducing the CO2 footprint of the University.
