Professor Janet Mifsud, from the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics was an invited chair at the recent African Epilepsy Congress held in Dakar, Senegal from 5-7 May 2017.
Professor Mifsud, who is Vice President Europe for the International Bureau for Epilepsy, was also invited to form part of the organising and scientific committee for this key conference for Africa.
This congress, which was attended by participants from over 50 countries, provided key information on new developments in the field of epilepsy, such as the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy at grassroots level, especially in Africa. The diverse programme in this congress reflected the firm commitment to improve the quality of life of people with epilepsy through support of education, research, knowledge dissemination and patient care; with the participation of renowned international and regional faculty.
Prof. Mifsud was asked to chair the session on practical aspects of the diagnosis of epilepsy and participated in the Round-Table Symposium on 'Patients and families, tradition, modern medicine in the era of globalization: impacts, challenges, opportunities' which was also attended by traditional healers. In her intervention, Professor Mifsud emphasised the important roles of the social, cultural and economic aspects in the management and mismanagement of epilepsy.
