Dr Rose Marie Azzopardi, from the Department of Economics within the Faculty of Economics, Management & Accountancy, was invited by DG ECFIN (Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs) for a seminar in Brussels, for think tank and academia representatives. This was held on the occasion of the 20 years of the Economic and Monetary Union.
The event included one representative from 20 member states and Dr Azzopardi represented Malta. The seminar was spread over two days and included presentations by high officials from DG ECFIN and DG FISMA (Directorate General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets).
It included discussions and networking possibilities. The seminar was very stimulating, offering an interesting debate on the European Union’s economic outlook, the question about a deeper economic and monetary union, the international role of the euro, the EU’s budget for the future, the European Semester and putting the right policies in place, presenting a case study of Italy, as an example. Discussions with other colleagues and officials also presented thought-provoking moments.
After the seminar Dr Azzopardi had a bilateral meeting on the Maltese economy, with the ECFIN country desk officer.
