On 30 August Mr Matthias Ebejer, an alumnus of the Department of History of the University of Malta, became the first ever Maltese researcher to be admitted to the European University Institute, a prestigious postgraduate university located in the countryside outside Florence.
Among other things, the Institute boasts a structured PhD programme that seeks to create multi-disciplinary and international networks through frequent workshops and seminars. The continued collaboration of researchers throughout the programme is considered as vital as the research itself, since it seeks to foster a mentality of sharing within academia.
Matthias's research project is entitled 'Spirituality in Warfare: the Knights of Malta 1530-1798', a relatively new branch in history that combines the history of emotions with the history of religion and social history in general. His work will attempt to shed light on the role that religious convictions and personal spirituality played on killing and dying on the battlefield, taking members of the Order of St John in the Maltese period as a case study.
