Professor Arthur Lyon Dahl, President of the International Environment Forum, and a former Deputy Assistant Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), visited the University of Malta upon invitation of Prof. Alan Deidun (Department of Geosciences).
On Wednesday 16 October Prof. Dahl delivered a lecture entitled ‘Environmental and Sustainability Challenges for Small Islands’, hosted by Dr Stefano Moncada within the study-unit ‘Development Studied and the EU’, part of the B.A. (Hons) course offered by the Institute for European Studies.
Pro-Rector Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino introduced Prof. Dahl to the students, reminding the audience of his 50 years of international experience in environment and sustainability, and of his pioneering work, both academic and at policy level, on sustainability issues in relation to islands and small states.
Prof. Dahl proceeded by delivering an inspiring lecture, stressing the importance of sustainable development, and the concept of limits to growth, by also focusing on the hope represented by the active involvement of young generations in today’s biggest challenges, such as climate change, trying to influence the political agenda and change the status quo.
Prof. Dahl highlighted the important role that Malta could play at United Nations level, by taking the lead to pioneer such changes, and by promoting the adoption of new fundamental concepts to this end, continuing on the inspiring work already conducted by Prof. Arvid Pardo in the previous decades.
