Language Technology (LT) already plays a key role in developing an inclusive, European Multilingual Digital Single Market. However, the LT landscape in Europe suffers from fragmentation by nation states, languages and sectors. The ELG has been established to address this problem.
The ELG will develop and deploy a scalable cloud platform, providing access to hundreds of commercial and non-commercial Language Technologies for all European languages, including running tools and services as well as data sets and resources. By allowing the European LT community to deposit and upload their technologies and data sets into the platform, to deploy them through the grid, and to connect with other resources, the ELG will boost the Multilingual Digital Single Market, creating new jobs, new markets and new opportunities.
Through a series of open calls, up to 20 pilot projects will be financially supported to demonstrate the usefulness of the European Language Grid, both as a platform and also as a European project and initiative.
The project is rooted in the experience of a core consortium that has established 32 National Competence Centres across Europe including the University of Malta. Representatives from each centre will promote ELG in their region and establish bridges to their local funding agencies. As a group and network, the NCCs will form the foundation of the emerging European Language Technology Council
