Research work being carried out by the Department of Pharmacy at UM, on the application of pharmacogenetics for the optimisation and personalisation of use of medicines, was presented as a workshop during the 48th European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP) conference.
The workshop which was fully subscribed on both sessions, focused on ‘Pharmacogenetics as a tool for clinical pharmacists to promote precision medicine in a digitalised environment’. Results from research in the area of cardiology, psychiatry, pain management and perceptions on pharmacogenetic application were shared with the participants.
The workshop was presented by Professor Anthony Serracino-Inglott together with Dr Luana Mifsud Buhagiar and Dr Althea Xuereb, both having completed their doctoral dissertations in the research area of pharmacogenetics this year.
During the conference in Slovenia, the pharmacy practice research group of the Department of Pharmacy presented research results in the areas of point-of-care testing, transition of care models and drug information.
Dr Ivan Debono and Dr Timothy Scicluna gave an oral presentation of their doctorate in pharmacy research dissertations on ‘Reducing hospital readmissions in heart failure patients through pharmacist-facilitated transition-of-care interventions’ and ‘Pharmacist Drug Information Access at Patient Bedside’ respectively.
