During a short ceremony held on 1 August, University of Malta Pro-Rector, Professor Joseph M. Cacciottolo, presented certificates of achievement to 100 students who successfully completed one or more Units within the University’s Programme in the Liberal Arts and Sciences (PLAS) during the academic year 2018-2019.
Three students were also awarded the Certificate in Liberal Studies (Cert.L.S.), while others will be receiving the Higher/Diploma and the Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies during the November graduation ceremonies.
The Programme’s broad appeal can be seen in the diverse profiles of certificate recipients. Its flexibility and learner-oriented ethos gives individuals the opportunity to follow PLAS Units for their personal or professional development, and at their own pace.
PLAS Units consist of weekly evening lectures held between 18:00 and 20:00, normally spread over 14 weeks. Applicants are free to choose any and as many PLAS units as they wish.
18 Units will be offered in Semester 1 of 2019/20, commencing in October 2019 and running until January 2020. The subjects covered include herbal science, nature photography, beekeeping, psychology of communication, sociology, opera, cultural intelligence, anthropology, astronomy, science fiction and others.
Two PLAS Tech Units are also being offered. The rationale of these Units is to respond to the need for ICT professionals to enrich their academic education with focused expertise on a selection of current and emerging software technologies and tools. In the next semester, Units on Java and Audio Engineering are being offered. PLAS Tech Units are included in the Get Qualified scheme.
Applications for PLAS Units are now being received through the website of the Centre for the Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). More information on individual Units and application fees can also be found on the website. The deadline for applying is 16 September 2019.
