Prof. Sergio Portelli and Dr Karl Chircop recently co-edited a volume of essays entitled Percorsi del testo. Adattamento e appropriazione della letteratura italiana (Franco Cesati Editore, 2020).
Prof. Sergio Portelli is the Head of the Department of Translation, Terminology & Interpreting Studies at the Faculty of Arts. Dr Karl Chircop is the Subject Coordinator for Foreign Languages at the Junior College.
In the fifteen essays included in the book, the analysis of the relationship between a text and its adaptation/appropriation is not aimed at expressing value judgements.
The scholars’ attention is rather concentrated on the creative processes that take place when a text is adapted or appropriated to create a new work in the same or in a different genre, and possibly in a different language. The ensuing artistic creation is born to a life of its own with a different scope, and is addressed to an audience that does not necessarily know the work that inspired it. In this dynamic process, the source text takes on a generative role with respect to other works that respond to new creative needs and that are aimed at a different audience in terms of culture, age or interests.
