Online gaming operator Mr Green is backing an initiative to clean the coastal waters around the island of Malta, where the company has its headquarters.

Mr Green launches Malta Clean the Sea project

In collaboration with the University of Malta and the International Ocean Institute, Mr Green will this summer take direct action to maintain clean and healthy waters. The initiative also includes students from the University of York in the UK, studying for an MSc in Marine Environmental Management.

Mr Green employees will take part in the project through a volunteering programme in which they will join the students on the Mr Green-branded rib boat used for this project.

Jesper Kärrbrink, CEO of Mr Green, said: “As a Malta-based company, we are - as are many other Maltese - concerned about the increasing amount of plastic in the Mediterranean sea.

“The seas are an essential part of our ecosystem and we want to contribute to their improvement.

“We want to drive awareness of the sea’s health status by spreading the knowledge gathered,” said Kärrbrink. “We hope to educate and inspire all the individuals we will meet throughout the summer by sharing our research.”

Professor Alan Deidun, director of the International Ocean Institute in Malta, added: “The anticipated outputs from this study include a preliminary identification of debris-beaching hotspots along the monitored beaches and a better understanding of the coastal dynamics of beaching, pursuant to providing corresponding recommendations to coastal managers.”
