A Data Carpentry Workshop will be run on 16 and 17 May from 10:30-18:30hrs. The event will be held in TR003, IT Services Building, University of Malta and will be open to all University of Malta faculty and research staff, postgraduate students and other researchers particularly researchers in life sciences areas.
This event is being sponsored by the HORIZON 2020 TWINNING Project TrainMalta in collaboration with Data Carpentry and the University of Cambridge.
The workshop will cover basic concepts, skills and tools for managing, analyzing and sharing more effectively large amounts of data collected during research. It is aimed at researchers in the life sciences at all career stages and is designed for those with little to no prior knowledge of programming, shell scripting, or command line tools. Interested audience will have the opportunity to be trained by our collaborators from the University of Cambridge remotely by live-streaming.
The programme includes the following:
- How to use spreadsheet programs (such as Excel) more effectively, and the limitations of such programs
- Getting data out of spreadsheets and into more powerful tools (such as RStudio)
- Data management and manipulation
- Data visualization
- Workflows and automating repetitive tasks, in particular using the command line shell
