What's new in OAR@UM
Newest additions in the collection of Maltese Medical Journals
The collection of Maltese medical journals in OAR@UM experiences steady growth as the two leading titles, Malta Medical Journal (MMJ) and Malta Medical School Gazette (MMSG), both published by the University of Malta Medical School, release brand new issues. MMJ Vol. 31, No. 1 features a total of three original articles and two case reports, bringing forth latest research in non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage, non ketotic coma, and more, whilst MMSG Vol. 2, No 4 showcases two review articles and case report on topics such as pseudohyponatraemia and intramuscular coronary artery grafting.
Additionally, yet another Maltese title – Chest-piece - has been digitized and added, further expanding the medical journal collection. Chest-piece was the journal of the Maltese branch of the British Medical Students' Association, published between 1948 and 1979. The main aim of the publication was to present important, up-to-date knowledge from the field to the to the medical professionals as well as to the general public.
Open Access Fact of the Month
Open Access can be divided into two subtypes - gratis and libre - that specify the user rights when it comes to accessing the content. Whilst the former eliminates the price barrier and allows free of charge access (but not more than that), the latter eliminates the price barrier as well as certain copyright/licensing restrictions. Various degrees of libre OA are specified by a set of open licenses, widely known as Creative Commons. With the exception of the CC-Zero license which offers a maximum degree of libre OA whereby the copyright is virtually nonexistent and the work can be legally used and reused in any way (including commercial purposes), all open licenses require the attribution to the original author (the CC-BY) at the very least.
