A short training course, 'Supporting suicidal and/or severely distressed students', has been developed in close collaboration with Richmond Foundation. This training course coincides with the launch of the staff guidelines.
The first two sessions of this training course will be offered to Deans, Deputy Deans, Heads of Department and Faculty Managers.
The aim of this course is to help the participants assess the risk of suicide in students and colleagues and provide them with safe and reliable intervention. The trainers will refer to the University of Malta 'Supporting suicidal and/or severely distressed students' staff guidelines. The course is interactive and the training will entail a variety of teaching styles and tools. Each participant will receive relevant material and a certificate of attendance.
By the end of the course the participants will:
1. be aware of the main signs of suicide and distress
2. make accurate assessment of the risk of suicide
3. be able to talk with suicidal students and direct for help
4. become more aware of the myths related to suicide.
