What’s new in OAR@UM
New issues of the Bulletin of the Entomological Society of Malta and Xjenza Online
The Maltese journal collection in OAR@UM presents the newest issues of the Bulletin of the Entomological Society of Malta, a peer-reviewed scientific journal with contents indexed in Biosis Previews, Biological Abstracts, Biosis Citation Index and Zoological Record, and Xjenza, a prestigious, peer-reviewed, Open Access international journal published by the Malta Chamber of Scientists.
BulESM, 2018, Volume 10 brings forth a total of 16 articles, the majority of which focus on the new records of diverse species of insects in the Maltese archipelago and Bulgaria.
Xjenza, Volume 7, Issue 1 features papers tackling a wide variety of issues across the scientific fields, including neural networks, Maltese tourism, land cover mapping and more.
Open Access fact of the month
Unlike Green Open Access which does not incur any additional costs for neither the author nor the venue (institutional or subject repository), Gold OA inadvertently requires the payment of a publication fee, also known as the article processing charge (APC). The fee is borne either by the authors themselves or alternatively by their affiliated institutions, and - depending on the journal - can be required at different stages of the submission process. There are several alternatives to this model, however: Platinum/Diamond OA journals that don’t charge the authors and instead cover the necessary costs from different revenue streams, such as advertising, crowdfunding or foundations; Hybrid OA journals that publish a mix of OA and non-OA articles, offering the OA option only to those who pay the APC; and Delayed OA journals that initially publish their content in restricted access, then release them into OA after a certain embargo period.
