Rider-Centred Product+Service System for Designing Safer Motorcycles

- Applications are invited for a funded M.Sc. by Research opportunity to work on the project entitled 'Rider-Centred Product+Service System for Designing Safer Motorcycles' (RIDE+SAFE). RIDE+SAFE is a project financed by the Malta Council for Science & Technology through the Technology Development Programme 2018.
- Applicants should have a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering with at least Second Class Honours and a strong background in control systems engineering, dynamic system modelling and simulation, and control system design. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience on modelling, control and simulation of mechatronic systems.
- The selected candidate is required to register for an M.Sc. by Research degree programme in Electrical Engineering at the University of Malta, on a full-time basis, commencing in October 2018. These studies will be supported by an annual stipend of EUR 6,000 for a maximum duration of 12 months, following which the candidate will be able to request an extension of the programme for a maximum duration of 6 months on part-time basis.
- Supervision of the M.Sc. studies will be provided by academics from the Department of Systems and Control Engineering. The Scholarship will be subject to the eligibility of the candidate to enrol in the Master’s programme.
International applicants are required to present an internationally recognised English Language proficiency Certificate at the required level. Further details are available online. International applicants are also advised to familiarise themselves with information available on the website of the International Office, particularly the sections concerning visas and e-residence permit conditions and requirements. International applicants will need to provide assurance that they have the funds available to cover their stay in Malta. The stipend awarded for this scholarship is to be considered as a form of allowance and will not cover all the costs attached to studying and living in Malta. Tuition / Enrolment Fees may apply.

- RIDE+SAFE (R&I-2017-003T) is financed by the Malta Council for Science & Technology through the Technology Development Programme 2018. The Project Co-ordinator is Dr Ing. Philip Farrugia from the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, in partnership with academic staff and resources from the Department of Systems and Control Engineering. The industrial partner, WKD Works Ltd, will provide its expertise in the development and evaluation of the motorcycle test jig.
- A user-centred design (UCD) approach places product users at the centre of the design process. Motivated by the alarming increase in motorcycle fatalities in Malta, this project is inspired by a UCD to develop safer motorcycles. The overall research goal of RIDE+SAFE is to develop an unprecedented Product Service System (PSS) which supports the design of customised and safer motorcycles, based on rider’s characteristics. - The candidate chosen for this specific call is expected to design and model a test jig that is able to provide a realistic and interactive virtual environment for the simulation of a motorcycle ride. The design should cater for visual and aural features, body tracking, physical control and vestibular effects (motion simulation) to emulate as realistically as possible the dynamics of a motorcycle ride.
- The appointee is expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.
