State-of-the-art confocal fluorescent microscope to be used in project GLOWRUST, which is located in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (DMME)
Call for Applications
Master of Science in Chemistry by Research
GLOWRUST Project
A project financed by the MarSA fund of the Malta Marittima Agency and the TAKEOFF Business Incubator
1. Applications are invited from potential candidates for a full-time M.Sc. in Chemistry by Research to work on a project to develop and test fluorescent smart molecules for the early detection of corrosion. The research project will be carried out under the supervision of Prof. David C. Magri of the Department of Chemistry in collaboration with Dr Glenn Cassar of the Department of Metallurgy & Materials Engineering. The candidate is to commence full-time study by 15 October 2017.
2. Suitable applicants will be in possession of a B.Sc. (Hons) degree with Chemistry, or Chemistry with Materials, or a B.Eng. (Hons) Mechanical Engineering (Melit.) with at least Second Class Honours from the University of Malta, or a comparable degree from another internationally recognised university obtained in the 10 years previous to registration for the Course. Excellent communication and writing skills in English are a prerequisite. Experience in research projects or industrial experience will be considered an asset.
3. This proof-of-concept project will investigate fluorescent detection of corrosion on metal surfaces by confocal fluorescence microscopy at the nanometer (microscopic) level. Training on the use of the instrument will be provided. Bench fees for the project are financed through funds obtained from the MarSA fund of the Malta Marittima Agency, Maritime Seed Fund Award through the TAKEOFF Business Incubator. There are no funds allotted to cover tuition fees and living expenses in Malta.
