Serious bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death due to traumatic injury. With three quick and effective interventions a first aider can control loss of blood and save an injured person's life. To increase awareness on the serious nature of bleeding and the importance of effective first aid in this circumstance, the month of May is dedicated as STOP THE BLEED® month, during which training activities were organised worldwide.
The Department of Nursing at the Faculty of Health Sciences within the University of Malta joined these efforts by training 100 Maltese nurses, student nurses and first responders in STOP THE BLEED® throughout the month of May.
The STOP THE BLEED® course consists of a 30-minute online introductory presentation followed by a 90-minute hands-on session. The course includes training on identifying serious bleeding, applying wound pressure and packing, and applying a tourniquet, following guidelines established by the American College of Surgeons.
The STOP THE BLEED® course is locally offered by the Department of Nursing, University of Malta, through an educational license granted to the Department of Nursing, University of Malta by the US Department of Defense. Participants on this course do not require a medical, nursing or paramedical background. Anyone who is interested in pursuing this course may register their interest through online, and we will get back to you with the course dates.
