Applicants for a doctoral research grant must be in possession of a Master’s degree in one of the following areas: Allied Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Medical Biochemistry and Pharmacology; or a Medical degree. The duration of the grant shall be the same as the duration of the research project period or as determined by the Faculty Research Funding Committee (FRFC).
Applicants must present the following documents with the application:
- University Letter of Acceptance;
- Research Proposal and covering letter;
- Supervisor’s endorsement;
- Faculty Research Ethics (FREC) approval;
- Budget including breakdown of expenses;
- Declaration that there are no other sources of funding;
- Informed consent and data protection;
- Bench fees form;
- CV and scanned copy of certificates.
The scholarship is intended to support students who have clear goals for their future and applicants are expected to explain how they believe doctoral research will allow them to shape their plans after graduation. Applicants are expected to declare any special attributes and accomplishments that they think make them deserving of the scholarship. Late applications will not be considered.
The selection procedure will involve:
- Scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/ or certificate
- Shortlisting
- An interview and/or extended interview.
This selection panel will make the final decision on successful candidates based on academic excellence and research potential. The selected applicants are obliged to sign a grant agreement, to provide progress reports twice annually (after each semester) to the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and as required by University regulations and procedures. At the end of tenure, a final report must be submitted highlighting the outcomes of the project.
Terms and conditions
The award may not be held concurrently with another major award for the same purpose unless with prior permission of the Doctoral School. The award holder may be engaged in paid employment during the tenure of the award if they are registered as part-time students. If they are reading for the doctoral studies full-time, paid employment cannot exceed 19 hours per week.
The award holder will be required to provide progress reports on an annual basis (normally in June) to the Doctoral School and as required by University regulations and procedures. At the end of tenure a final report must be submitted covering what has been achieved.
