The study-unit will offer an overview of the ethical and political dimension of AI. Which ethical and political values are impacted by the development and implementation of AI solutions? How are private or state interests superseding social and democratic values? The unit will identify and explore how the use of AI products in spheres such as welfare or justice systems, may lead to increasing injustice and discrimination. Similarly, how can the spread of AI lead to threats and challenges to democratic values and institutions. Whilst exploring these challenges, there will be an exploration of whether AI can instead serve to strengthen digital citizenship and participation.
