Waste Separation and Collection at UM
As part of the implementation of the strategy for sustainability, the University of Malta will strive to prevent waste and to separate any waste generated on campus so that it may be recycled. As of March 2020, students, staff and visitors will notice an increasing number of dedicated and labelled bins for different types of waste.
There will be fewer bins for Mixed waste on campus, thereby discouraging the generation of waste to landfill.
Plastics bin is to be used to dispose of clean bottles, cups, bottle caps, plastic bags and disposables, but not jablo.
Metals bin is to be used to dispose of clean cans, food tins, jar lids, and spray cans but not electronic waste
Glass bin is to be used to dispose of bottles and jars but not lightbulbs
Organics bin is to be used to dispose of cooked and raw food, teabags, coffee, soiled napkins and leaves.
Paper bins: due to the nature of waste at UM, there will be a larger number of Paper bins throughout campus, including the office waste paper baskets, which will now be used ONLY for clean paper. This includes used newspapers, magazines, small pieces of cardboard and food cartons - as long as they are clean. It is important not to dispose of soiled paper napkins, wipes or snack packets in paper baskets and bins. Clean or rinsed snack packets can go to paper/plastic bins.
Other types of waste like Electronic waste, Bulky waste or construction waste will also be collected separately by sending an email to works@um.edu.mt. A video clip to outline these details is available online.
To make this shift possible, the University of Malta needs the commitment of all students, staff and visitors, and in particular, the dedicated work of the UM's cleaning staff. A pilot project will take place with a view to heighten awareness on waste separation and to test any issues before the system is implemented throughout campus. The pilot areas are: Gateway, Administration, Students House and FEMA, as well as in the Quadrangle and Gateway outdoor areas.
C-SUM welcomes any feedback on the pilot project by email to: c-sum@um.edu.mt
