CaP Research Projects

 1. Performance On Nineteenth-Century Pianos

The project, which started with a recital by Michael Laus on a Blünther piano from 1890, on 21st October 2016, aims at highlighting the characteristics of this and other historic instruments and to develop period performance practice, particularly in relation to music of the Romantic period. The performance of nineteenth-century music, according to precepts of period performance practice and on historic instruments, is still in a relatively early stage of development, especially when compared to performance practice of earlier music. There is much new territory to be covered, with the possibility of exciting discoveries on how nineteenth-century music might have sounded to contemporary audiences.

The project is a collaboration between the following:

  • Historic Piano Concerts (Malta)
  • Nikolai Vukovic
  • The Mdina Cathedral Museum
  • Musicians from the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra
  • SPA Research in Culture and Performance

2. The Mediterranean Dimension: Initiation and (Re)creation

The project is aimed to serve as platform for practice and research on the cultural dimensions of performance in Malta and the Mediterranean. It will host, away from conflict and exile, artists and events that through their specific practices and qualities reveal different Mediterranean cultures. Diverse cultures will come together to create a fusion of different colours and sounds through performances and debates that will contribute towards a healthy society. The events address social, civic and political issues in terms of the project's underlying agenda to eliminate boundaries through cultural and artistic collaboration. Performers, artists, and researchers from different cultural backgrounds with different artistic formations, some formal and other informal, will come together to engage in creative experimentation.

The project is a collaboration between the following partners:

  • Valletta 2018 (Malta)
  • The Medinea Project (EuroMed network)
  • Festival d'Aix en Provence (France)
  • Egyptian Centre for Culture and Arts 'Makan' (Egypt)
  • Fondazzjoni Kreattivita (Malta)
  • A Soul For Europe (Germany)
  • The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (Malta)
  • SPA Research in Cultural and Performance (Malta)
