Ms Francesca Abela Tranter

Francesca Abela Tranter MPS (Dance) is a dance artist and choreographer. She trained at the Tanya Bayona Princess Poutiatine Dance Academy in Malta, and obtained a diploma from London Contemporary Dance School, specialising in Contemporary Dance and Choreography, and a Master’s Degree in Performance Dance Studies from the University of Malta’s School of Performing Arts. Since 1981 she has taught, choreographed, and mentored extensively. Francesca has a wide range of experience in Contemporary dance styles, and teaches Graham, Cunningham, Limon, Safety Release, Flying Low, Horton, improvisation, contact work, and choreography through both practical and theoretical methods of delivery. She encourages improvisation as an art and choreographic tool to further develop her education work. As a curator and advisor she has brought renowned international dance companies to Maltese theatres and developed new audiences by promoting performance platforms for collaborative artistic exchange. Francesca was resident choreographer and dancer for the Tanya Bayona Dance Theatre Company (1988 – 1998) and developed the Contemporary department at The Dance Workshop (1998 – 2015). She founded Contact Dance Company in 1998 as a vehicle to promote her own choreographic research. Since its inception she has created numerous works for the company as well as independent commissions collaborating with international choreographers and musicians. Committed to the importance of art as a cultural exchange and education, her work has toured to high profile theatres and festivals in Malta, England, Scotland, Poland, Hungary, Belgrade, Italy, Lithuania, Germany, Turkey, Tunis, Portugal, France, Scotland, Cyprus and Greece.

Francesca has directed and produced various dance projects and operas and has contributed widely to the growth of the contemporary dance scene in Malta. She continues to collaborate and network internationally, creating opportunities for young dancers. Her practice research interests are to continue to develop and uncover the potential of a recognizable Maltese style/ national identity which is significantly current to the Mediterranean.  In 2001 she founded and annually organizes the dance platform ‘Dance Hybrid Malta’ hosting international guest artists. In 2011 she launched ‘Dance on the Move’ a weekly platform hosting master classes conducted by a rotation of celebrated local and international teachers. After much contemplation and years of working within private dance schools developing strong artistic individuals she now coordinates The Evening Space as part of the University of Malta’s School of the Performing Arts Outreach programme, providing exceptional dance training to the general public through a wide range of teachers. She is a member of the teaching faculty at the University Of Malta School Of Performing Arts since 2010. Francesca sits on the programming committee of the Malta International Arts festival. She is currently collecting data for her publication investigating the Legacy of Contemporary Dance in Malta a chronological study of events that impacted and influenced changes towards Contemporary dance in Malta since the 70s whilst developing a digital archival dance library for research purposes. / / /
