B. Theatre (Hons)

Apply to B.Theatre (Hons) 2017/8

Course Overview

The B. Theatre (Hons) is aimed at giving students a wide perspective of the practices as well as the histories and theories related to theatre and performance.

The B. Theatre (Hons) offered by the School of Performing Arts differs from the B.A. in Theatre Studies (Hons) offered by the Faculty of Arts by having more practice-based study-units with a focus on a range of essential knowledge and basic skills necessary in staging practices, such as lighting, sound, stage design, scenography, prop-making, costumes, as well as risk assessment and health and safety awareness.

The first year of study equips students with foundational knowledge and skills for more in-depth study later in the course, including: practical units in performance and staging skills, acting styles and approaches, as well as historical perspectives of theatre. Years two and three focus on more specialised subjects, including training and composition processes, theories of acting, performance criticism, applied/community performance, focused aspects of theatre history and theory, as well as arts and cultural management. In year three, students are given the opportunity to write a dissertation and research further any area of theatre and performance of their own choice.

Throughout Years 1 to 3, students are taught in a balanced mix of classroom-based and studio-based study-units, combining theoretical and practical experiential approaches and assessment.

Career Opportunities and Access to Further Study

Our study-units are designed and taught to international standards of excellence, as evidenced by the teaching staff’s qualifications and experience, as well as by the input and academic auditing of international professionals. We believe that the range and quality of the study-units we offer give our students an advantage in a competitive world.

Past students of Theatre Studies have found jobs at universities (in Malta and abroad), in various schools and sixth forms, in the media, as well as in the cultural industries, including government agencies in education and culture, the Malta Arts Council, the Manoel Theatre, St James Cavalier, Drama Centre, Drama Unit, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, V18 Foundation, and the Malta Arts Festival.

Other graduates have used skills and knowledge learnt during their course to develop careers in diplomacy, management, and private enterprise. A good number of our students have continued with their studies at postgraduate level, including PhDs, in Malta and abroad.
