Conservation Areas and their Biodiversity

Placement Type: Internship (200-300hrs)

Placement Description:

This placement will be giving the opportunity to successful students to join in unique ongoing research work in the field and in the laboratories linked to local biodiversity conservation research. Various species, habitats and conservation areas will be investigated and both terrestrial and marine environments are considered. So the student may select to work with marine species/habitats or terrestrial species/habitats.

Skills Gained and Learning Opportunities:

The students will have the opportunity to learn more about local species, their habitats, their conservation needs and the best scientific methods used to study these features of local biodiversity from genes to species to ecosystem. This entails both field experience and/or laboratory experience. The students will also learn how knowledge may be used in various ways to improve local awareness, educational tools and recommendations for policy makers. Also relevant is the connections of conservation research with sustainable use of natural resources and climate change which will also feature as part of the long-term projects run by this research group. Students will also have the opportunity to learn how the biological knowledge is linked to social and economic considerations of nature which need to be taken in to consideration for feasible and concrete conservation measures to be adopted in the future.

Total Number of Hours: 5 to 6 hours per day for 10 to 12 weeks

Requirements:

Good level of English language, and background in biology at least till "A Level".

Other Qualities:

Dedication and keen interest in the voluntary internship work to be undertaken. Some experience in outdoor activities and/ or laboratory work would be an asset.
