Marine Safety Investigator Temporary Placement/s

Placement Type: Paid Internship (400-500hrs)

Placement Description:

The chosen candidate/s will be working under the guidance of a Senior Investigator and a very experienced Head of Maritime Safety investigations. The main functions of a safety investigator are to respond to any accident and / or incident, irrespective of the determined severity of the consequences, potential consequences, and/or type of accident; to investigate marine accidents and incidents, and determine their causes and contributing factors; to ensure the preservation of human, documentary and physical evidence as practicable as possible; to identify and gather all the available evidence, in line with the MSIU’s internal procedures / guidelines; to provide an accurate picture of the safety issues of accidents and incidents, within time scales and procedures; to contribute positively to the effective investigation management of the investigation process; The candidate/s may consider this post as an opportunity to experience at first hand the duties of a safety investigator within the maritime Safety Investigation Unit (MSIU). This placement is not considered as a formal employment but any experience gained will be given due merit should there be a call for a more permanent position within MSIU.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate/s should come from a scientific or engineering background. Preference will be given to students of the Faculty of Engineering, in particular to those who have the aptitude to work in an industrial marine/port environment. Given the nature of the work, the candidates are expected to have a minimum of Grade 5 in Maltese at SEC level or equivalent.
