Research Officer - SHAPEC Project

Placement Description:

Applications are invited for two Research Officers to work on the development of a Software Defined Radio (SDR) system for the Blu5 Labs SEcube™ SoC Platform as part of a project called Space Hardened Platform for Electronic Communications (henceforth referred to as SHAPEC). This is a project undertaken in collaboration with the Astrionics Research Group of the University of Malta and part financed by Malta Enterprise. The Research Support Officers will be responsible for the execution of a number of tasks related to the feasibility study project (SHAPEC) being undertaken as a result of a collaboration agreement signed between Blu5 Labs Limited and the University of Malta in 2016. The project aims to validate the SEcubeTM embedded SoC platform for space applications. Further information about the project may be obtained from the websites at: • • • The appointee is expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by Blu5 Labs Limited. The selection procedure will involve: a. scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed; b. scrutiny of supporting testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application); and c. an interview and/or extended interview. The part time post is for a period of 6 months (26 weeks), which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the Blu5 Labs Limited which are now or which may hereafter be in force.

Skills Gained and Learning Opportunities:

Skills Gained and Learning Opportunities are in line with the main duties and responsibilities of the appointee, which will consist of carrying out Research and Project Management Assistant duties including: a. produce deliverables and related reports within the stipulated time frames as specified in the project description: the successful applicants would be developing a Software Radio Platform based on the SEcubeTM System-on-a-Chip (SoC), that exploits its FPGA, Microprocessor and Smartcard functionality in a manner that improves reliability in adverse operating conditions; b. assess the SEcubeTM SoC platform for suitability for satellite communication applications; c. identify possible architectural improvements in the SEcubeTM SoC platform to enhance performance and reliability in laboratory conditions representative of the space environment; d. collaborate with other research staff and students to perform testing and holistic evaluation of the SEcubeTM SoC platform; e. attend Astrionics Research Group meetings to keep abreast with project progress; f. keep detailed progress reports and abide to all the conditions imposed by the project; g. collaborate to generate technical and scientific conference/journal papers; h. assist in the dissemination process with the research stakeholders via a workshop/seminar; i. attend meetings as the need arises; and j. perform any other project related task as instructed by the project coordinator and key experts.

Total Number of Hours: The part-time posts are initially for a period of 494 hours spread across 6 months (26 weeks at 19 hours per week), but may be extended if necessary.

Applicants applying for the posts, must be in possession of a first (Honours) degree (Second Class or better) or currently be studying for or be in possession of, a Masters degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering or Communications and Computer Engineering.
