Our management

The Humanities and Medical Science Platform (HUMS) at the University of Malta was instituted following a joint request by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery to the Senate of the University. Senate, at its meeting on Thursday 26 January 2012 upheld the request.

The HUMS Platform  was formally recognised by the Council of the University of Malta at its meeting on Thursday 9 February 2012. The platform was extended to the Faculty of Science in 2013 changing its name to Humanities, Medicine and Sciences Platform.

The first HUMS meeting was held at the library of the Faculty of Arts on Friday 27 January 2012. The meeting was inaugurated by Professor Juanito Camilleri, Rector of the University of Malta and introduced jointly by Professor Dominic Fenech, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Professor Godfrey LaFerla, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

The Management of the HUMS Platform as established by Senate shall have the following structure:

  • A coordinator appointed by Council and a Board appointed by Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Boards of Arts and of Medicine and Surgery.
  • The Board shall consist of the coordinator and five other members, two each from the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, and one from the Faculty of Science. Chairmanship of the board shall be held jointly, with the joint chairmen being chosen by and from among the members.
  • The appointment of the coordinator and the members of the Board shall be for one year, which can be renewed.
  • The Platform will operate as a cost center, subject to the University’s financial regulations.
