 Training of local small-scale fishermen through the SeaofSkills project 

The SeaofSkills (Enriching Fishers’ Knowledge, Expertise and Competencies) project, funded under the Erasmus+ Programme, aims to provide life-long vocational, learning and training material to artisanal (small-scale) fishermen in Malta, Greece and Turkey. A total of 5 countries are participating in this project, including Malta, which is represented by the University of Malta through Prof. Alan Deidun and Prof. Mark Anthony Falzon. 

Questionnaires were held in 2015 with fishermen in these 3 countries with the aim of empowering fishermen to identify the most important issues for them. Training material on the following subjects:
  • Safety at sea
  • Technology on boats
  • Fishing legislation
  • Fish preservation
  • Business skills

has been compiled by the 3 project participating Universities (University of the Aegean [Greece], Ege University [Turkey] and the University of Malta) and is being translated into Maltese, besides the other national languages. This training material will be showcased to all local artisanal fishermen in a multiplier event being organised in Malta later this year, on the
