Professor Ellul obtained his B.Sc. in Chemistry and Physics in 1976 and M.Sc. in 1978 from the University of Malta. He subsequently obtained his Dr. Rer. Nat. working at the Max Planck Institute fur Strahlenchemie in Mülheim/Ruhr, Germany.
He has researched on several subjects both in Germany and in the UK and has worked for two companies developing scientific instruments before joining the University. In 1993 he spent a sabbatical year at the MPI/Mainz whence arose his present interest in Atmospheric Research. He has around 60 publications.
