Biography

Dr. Rita Borg Xuereb is the Head of the Department of Midwifery, and a senior lecturer, with the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Malta. She is a registered nurse, registered midwife, has a Diploma in Adult Education, a Masters degree in Midwifery Education and a PhD which focused on the transition to parenthood. She has forty years experience as a healthcare professional (nurse, 13years; midwife, 28years) and former president of the Malta Midwives Association (2001-2007). She was a member of the Malta Council for Nurses and Midwives (1990-2013); the Head of CPD programmes (2003-2009) for Health Professionals. She was responsible for developing and setting up of the Department of Midwifery, University of Malta in 2009. She is a Visiting Lecturer with University of Newcastle, UK, and successfully set up Bilateral Erasmus exchange agreements for students and teachers, with several European Universities. She has successfully supervised masters and co-supervised PHD students to completion. She was a member of the EAHC/2013/Health/07 reference network as a Midwifery Academic expert. She was on the Management committee of the COST Action IS0907 Childbirth, Cultures, Concerns and Consequences.

Dr. Borg Xuereb is an elected Board member of the International Confederation of Midwives, ICM, (Southern Europe) and the ICM liaison Board member for education (2014-). Dr Borg Xuereb is a core-team member of the ICM global project concerning the updating of ICM Basic Essential Competencies for Midwives. She has represented ICM at several international World Health Organisation meetings, and workshops acting as temporary advisor for WHO, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) workshops that concerns sexual, reproductive, maternal and child health and wellbeing and midwifery education. In 2016, she represented ICM at a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation meeting concerning the use of mhealth and at the High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth: Expert group and health Professions Associations Consultations.

She is a peer reviewer of local and international journals. Topics of interest include, midwifery education, practice, mixed-method and qualitative research, the transition and preparation for parenthood, and perinatal mental health.

Member of the core team of the international research project aiming to review and upgrade
the ICM Essential Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice. This project is in progress and
involves several Delphi surveys across all the regions of the world. It is due to be
completed by June 2017.
