This STSM inserts in the framework of the open debate about the large variability in dielectric properties of different organs reported by various research groups worldwide. A good starting point to understand the origin of this difference (still present even when referred to the same organ), on top of the definition of a reliable and unambiguous measurement protocol, is the identification of some classifier for the dielectric measurement data.
It has been already demonstrated that the utilization of the hydration level as a classifier for the dielectric measurements has a limitation for what concerns the heterogeneous organs, since there is not a direct statistically significant correlation between the measured dielectric properties of these samples and their variation in water content. For this reason, the sample density as a potential classifier for the measured dielectric properties of heterogeneous tissues was investigated. Porcine lungs were chosen as representative of this category of tissues and 28 samples derived from 7 different lungs (therefore, 4 pigs) were analysed, up to 50GHz.
