Carbonate escarpments

Carbonate escarpments are limestone and dolomite cliffs with relief in excess of 1 km; they can be up to 650km long and have average slope gradients exceeding 40°. Carbonate escarpments comprise some of the most dramatic, and least understood, landforms on the seafloor. The aim of our current research is to characterise the morphology and dynamics of carbonate escarpments in unprecedented detail and understand their role in sediment export and margin development, with particular references to submarine landslides (Micallef et al., 2013) and canyon erosion.
