The University of Malta joins the Vision 2020 network!

The UM recent collaboration with University College London (UCL) developed in the UM joining the Vision 2020 network. The aim of the network is to connect institutions wishing to succeed in Horizon 2020 funding. It works through the operation of "Helixes" which are communities focused on a particular research topic. These Helixes organise specific events in order to bring proposers together and form consortia to apply for topic-specific calls. In addition, the helix will have a leading role in discussions with the European Commission on their strategy in the area. Further information may be found here.

It also has an online platform called "Crowdhelix" for partner searches. We are pleased to announce that YOU as a University of Malta Academic / Researcher can now use this platform in order to:
  • Find partners to join you in a consortium for a proposal you wish to lead;
  • Join a consortium applying under a particular call as a partner.
What are you waiting for? Registration is quick and easy, and may be done here.

In addition, the UM has taken the lead of a newly formed Marine & Maritime (M&M) helix. Malta is ideally positioned to be in the forefront of research in the marine and maritime area, and the UM has shown this commitment through the establishment of the University Maritime Platform (UMP), with the intention of facilitating collaboration between University of Malta entities, industry and policy makers in the areas of research, education and training. The launch M&M event shall be held in Malta next month.

September featured the Vision 2020 Marine & Maritime Helix Launch event at Villa Bighi, Kalkara, attractive for its strategic location in Valletta Grand Harbour and its historical significance, both representative of the theme and the event.

A variety of international delegates came from within the Vision 2020 Network and also from outside the network, coming together to build consortia for applying under Horizon 2020 calls in the Marine and Maritime Field. They interacted with diversity of Maltese delegates who attended the event, both as University of Malta Academics as well as representatives from Industry.

Breakout sessions were held with the aim of building consortia for applying for funding under the following calls: Multi-use of the Maritime space, where the University of Malta shall be leading the consortium; Solutions for biobased plastics for maritime applications, whereby two coordinators were present in order to consolidate their consortium; New solutions for the sustainable production of raw materials, where a coordinator was present; and Building a water smart economy and society, where collaborative opportunities were explored.

The group were taken for a guided tour of Kalkara and the 3 cities, and participated in a networking dinner in Valletta.
