With over 300 laboratory spaces within UM, the majority of which generate chemical waste, a standard operating procedure (UNI-OP-003) has been designed to streamline the management of this waste. This procedure is applicable to all members of staff, students and third parties making use of the University’s premises. Each department is responsible to segregate its waste appropriately as well as keep a log of the waste it generates by means of the standardised waste registers, log sheets and labels.
RSSD, together with the H&S Office, is responsible to coordinate university-wide chemical waste removal campaigns. Two campaigns have been carried out in 2015 and 2017. RSSD maintains a central repository of chemical waste registers and log sheet documents. RSSD also acts as a centralised channel of information allowing easier transfer of knowledge, expertise and practices between the various departments, institutes, centres and schools.
