An 1888 Volcanic Collapse Becomes a Benchmark for Tsunami Models
Scientists aboard the R/V Sonne (shown here) profiled the seafloor and subsurface structures near Ritter Island, north of New Guinea, in 2016. A large portion of this volcanic island collapsed and slid into the sea in 1888, making it an ideal case study for modeling volcanic collapse landslides and the tsunamis they generate.
