Dr Angelo Marra presented a public lecture titled ‘Disability Discrimination Laws in Italy, Malta and the United Kingdom’ on the 1st December 2014.

Disability discrimination national laws seem to follow the same framework in EU. The basic concepts derive from the EU Directive 2000/78/EC, but the Directive itself owes much to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) of the United Kingdom.
What is the common understanding of Disability discrimination today? Italian and Maltese anti-discrimination laws will be compared to find out the answer, we will seek similarities and differences in these Mediterranean countries also looking at the European Disability Strategy and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Does Anti-discrimination Law work?  To answer these questions Dr Marra looked at existing remedies and their results in southern Europe’s anti-discrimination legislation. This will highlight the Not-Yet-Solved issues and possibly suggest the next steps for Disability Discrimination Legislation. Click here to download his presentation.
