The Relationship between Maltese Adolescents and their Parents

The Department of Family Studies - then the Centre for Family Studies - held its first research conference on Monday 31 October 2011 at Aula Magna, Valletta Campus, St. Paul Street, Valletta. The Conference, which was entitled The Relationship between Maltese Adolescents and their Parents, was held under the Patronage of HE The President of the Republic, Dr George Abela. Professor Mary Anne Lauri (Chair of the Centre for Family Studies) chaired the conference.

A presentation of the research project carried out under the auspices of HE the President of the Republic on the quality of the relationship between Maltese adolescents and their parents was delivered. Professor Angela Abela (Director of the Centre for Family Studies), Dr Ruth Farrugia (senior lecturer at the Faculty of Laws and Board member of the Centre for Family Studies), Ms Marita Galea (counselling psychologist) and Dr Deborah Schembri (family lawyer), who form the research team, delivered the presentation [PDF]. 

Dr John Coleman OBE who is a research fellow at the University of Oxford delivered a keynote presentation [PDF].  He has written widely about adolescence, and is the author of The nature of adolescence, now in its fourth edition.  His most recent books include Adolescence and health (John Wiley, 2007) and Adolescence, risk and resilience (John Wiley, 2007).

Members of the Standing Committee on Family Affairs and of the Standing Committee on Social Affairs, policymakers, experts and professionals working in this area attended for this conference. Parents and adolescents also attended.
