Prior to its inception as a Department within the Faculty for Social Wellbeing, the Department of Family Studies was set up as a Centre for Family Studies.

The Centre for Family Studies was formally launched during a ceremony held at Auberge de Castille on 15 December 2010. Distinguished guests included Minister Dolores Cristina, Shadow Minister Michael Farrugia, the Honourable Mr Justice Noel Cuschieri, the Child Commissioner Ms Helen d'Amato, the Director of the National Statistics Office Mr Michael Pace Ross, as well as many University academic members of staff. The audience was welcomed by the Centre's Director, Professor Angela Abela, who delivered a short speech highlighting the aims and objectives of the Centre. Professor Mary Anne Lauri, the Centre's Chair, also addressed the audience present. Professor Abela then introduced Professor Janet Walker OBE who delivered the keynote presentation [PDF]. After her presentation, Professor Walker, together with Professor Abela, answered some questions from the floor. The audience was regaled with short musical interludes by members of a family of musicians. The Prime Minister concluded the ceremony with a short address. This was followed by a reception.
