DESCRIPTION The study-unit aims to provide students with a framework for the understanding of career development issues. It will present an overview of career theories as well as training in appropriate counselling interventions and procedures. Students will be able to apply theory and practice to current and potential career counselling situations.

Study-unit Outline:

- Introduction, Method, Delivery, Participation, Assignment;
- History of Careers, Psychological and Sociological Perspectives;
- Trait and Factor Theory;
- Developmental Theory;
- Personality Based Theories;
- Structural Theories;
- Social Learning Theories;
- A Comprehensive Approach to Career Guidance;
- Recent Developments in Career Guidance;
- Careers Education;
- The Helping Interview;
- Testing and Assessment;
- Gender Issues in Careers;
- Counselling Special Groups;
- Field Observation.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide students with opportunities to consider diverse career development approaches and how these can be used in individual and group counselling interventions at both educational and employment levels. The students will also be given opportunities to be able to create programmes for career education at educational and employment entities.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify, compare and contrast major paradigms within the career development domain;
- Illustrate how major paradigms can be applied to real life situations and clients;
- Identify how different decision styles lead to different career decision making processes;
- Explain different career dilemmas through the use of career development case studies.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply problem-solving strategies in career counselling situations;
- Interpret career problems within the life experience of the client;
- Create diverse individual and group programmes within different contexts;
- Design career education programmes around the themes of self-exploration, opportunity awareness, decision-making, and transition awareness.
