| DESCRIPTION | Prison officers and prisoners are made to live and work together in an atmosphere that is maintained by a strict regime of discipline and ritual. The prison architecture aims at controlling prisoners, the timetable gives a certain rhythm to what happens and the prison officers help in maintaining the illusion of power and order. This will be used as a fulcrum to develop this study-unit. Individuals in prisons are influenced by the ambience they are in but also by the policy that is imposed on them. Students will be exposed to an analysis of the development of Maltese prison legislation and how this was influenced from changes abroad. The prison architecture, the prison regulations issues such as prison overcrowding, the relationship between wardens and prisoners, health standards in prison and rehabilitation will also be discussed. Study-unit Aims: To familiarise students with life in a prison both from the offenders and the officers' point of view. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Provide a written analysis of the prisoner's life; - Recognize patterns of behaviour of prison officers and prisoners; - Analyse prison problems and dilemmas in various prison systems. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse the different prison systems and be able to identify the good points of each system; - Differentiate between good practice and bad practice in prison programmes.
