DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to advocate different approaches that make offenders conscious of the nature and magnitude of the harm committed to their victims. Such approach requires that the wrongdoers engage in reparative deeds suggesting different ways of forgiveness, reconciliation and reintegration in the community. This unit discuss how ideally wrongdoers and victims meet and actively address how the offender can repair for the harm committed, while the victims heal from the trauma.

Study-unit Aims:

- To explain how the concept of restorative justice developed;
- To discuss the key concepts of restorative justice;
- To discuss how restorative justice relates to more conventional criminal justice concepts such as: conflict resolution, issues of gender and race.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- have a good knowledge and understanding of why the criminal justice system chooses to implement the concepts of restorative justice in its practices; and
- discuss how the concepts of restorative justice developed and how these conflict resolution methods can mutually help both the wrongdoer and the victim in understanding each other while reducing crime.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to critically examine the practices and policies of restorative justice and help discuss the future developments of this prominent topic in the criminal justice system.
