| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will discuss the historical and theoretical frameworks of gender-based violence. It will consider the relations between the dominant cultural gender rules and norms, gender equality and gender-based violence. Since gender-based violence is a very complex issue the study-unit will include various theories and perspectives, including feminisms and masculinities, allowing the students space to critically reflect on the issue. It will cover the various definitions of gender-based violence, violence against women and domestic violence and exploration of their causes and effects. The dynamics of gender-based violence will be considered and discussed, including as seen from the perspectives of those experiencing it directly, those perpetrating it and those who witness it, such as in cases of domestic violence, often the children. The unit will also have an informative element since the current existing policy and practice in the field (including services) will also be critically discussed together with possible ways of improving what is available to better meet the needs of the survivors, the perpetrators and the 'witnesses'. European and local legislation will also be covered. Study-unit Aims: - To provide students with a conceptual framework with which to better understand gender-based violence, violence against women, domestic violence and abusive relationships; - To explore and consider the dynamics, causes and effects of gender-based violence, violence against women and domestic violence and help the students reflect on the wide ranging consequences; - To help students develop an understanding of the above from the different perspectives of those involved/affected; - To provide students with knowledge on existing legislation/policies/practices/resources both locally and in Europe, and to facilitate their critical evaluation of them in relation to meeting needs. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - describe their understanding of the concepts and dynamics involved in gender based violence, violence against women and domestic violence from different perspectives; - present and discuss critical analyses on resources/policies/legislation available, from a specific perspective; - formulate an increased awareness of the circumstances and the experiences of persons experiencing gender based violence, violence against women and domestic violence; - appraise their acquisition of knowledge on gender-based violence, violence against women and domestic violence in relation to the local and the European context. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply their increased knowledge, awareness and understanding of the issues to their daily lives and the lives of those around them; - relate academic knowledge and understanding to everyday situations; - implement increased proficiency in critical thinking, analysis and research skills.
