DESCRIPTION There are two different types of practicum: Internal and external. Both practicums involve 100 hours of work for the student.

Internal practicum: (according to availability of places)This is a research based practicum. Students will be working with academic staff on specific research projects. This gives students the opportunity to practice their research and writing skills and to collaborate with a member of academic staff.

External Practicum: Students will attend a hosting agency (according to availability of places) where they will be given specific working guidelines to follow. The agency will also be responsible to offer specific training and supervision.

Study-unit Outline:

Internal Practicum
Academic staff will present a research project to the course co-ordinator who will in turn present it for approval by the board of studies. The projects will be communicated to the students via eSIMS. Students will be able to choose to work on one of the projects according to availability. If demand is more than the available places the student’s ranking order will be taken into consideration (as on end of July of the academic year).

Students will be able to:
- Be involved in a research project;
- Discuss ethical issues involved;
- Develop research and writing skills;
- Develop presentation skills;
- The academic member of staff involved will supervise the student work and grade the work.

External practicum
This is a practical field placement and students will be able to choose one area of practice (according to availability). Students will be able to experience the different theories they have learnt in practice. They will encounter and discuss ethical issues, observe different work environments and analyze their philosophical framework, experience team work and some intervention techniques. The practical placement involves 80 hours of field work (including 7 hours of tutorials) and 20 hours for report writing and log-book.

Students will:
- Frequent a work environment where they will be given specific work to carry out;
- Observe the different services offered;
- Understand the workings of the agency;
- Understand the roles of the different professionals working in that setting especially those dealing with psychological issues;
- Understand the role and the needs of the clients;
- Assist in the delivery of services;
- Critically evaluate the services offered;
- Be followed preferably by a professional in the caring profession, if not by a psychologist;
- Link theory to practice;
- Keep a log-book of the activities and personal processing;
- Present a report and a log book to the field supervisor and academic supervisor.

The students are to present a Placement Contract which is approved by both supervisors before the placement begins. Students who begin their practicum without having the contract approved will automatically have their practicum disqualified resulting in a 0F. Students will also attend compulsory monthly tutorials during which they are asked to present their reflections and experiences.

Required Text:

Students will be asked to research their own support literature.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES This study-unit is only offered to Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) and Higher Diploma in Psychololgy students.
