TITLE Poverty and Social Exclusion

LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

DESCRIPTION This study-unit carries out on an interdisciplinary analysis of issues surrounding the conceptualisation, identification and measurement of poverty and social exclusion. While motivated by an interest in the lives of those affected by these phenomena, it studies and reflects on their manifestations and on action aiming to alleviate them for the sake of social justice, proposing and critically assessing policies and practices that serve this purpose.

Study-unit Aims:

- Students will be introduced to ideas about what is poverty, how social exclusion can be understood, as well as their causes and consequences.
- The unit also aims to familiarise students with other manifestations of social exclusion.
- Students will be given the opportunity to know about the various ways in which poverty and social exclusion have been tackled, and how successful this has been seen to be.
- Various levels will be considered as part of the teaching, ranging from social security, through other more 'in kind' forms of welfare, as well as other more radical views of how exclusion can be tackled and prevented.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- explain the definition of poverty as an object of policy and the various underlying political. interest and values systems.
- describe where and why poverty occurs, with special reference to poverty in Malta and in other selected countries, family poverty, child poverty and gender-linked poverty.
- critically describe and explain the history and socio-economic dynamics of poverty and policies to work to reduce it at local, country and EU level.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use, plan and conduct research to identify and assess poverty and social exclusion, as well as practices, strategies and policies that increase or reduce it.
- Develop, recommend, administer and deliver appropriate policies for the reduction of poverty.
- Promote inclusion through the identification and support of conducive discourse and communication as well as social and political action.
