TITLE Foundations of Spiritual Companionship

LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course


DEPARTMENT Moral Theology

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will explore the essentials of Spiritual Direction, namely, its history, its theology, its nature
(the difference between Spiritual Direction and Pastoral Counselling and Psychotherapy), its contents, the persons of the director and that of the directee, its psychological aspects and also some psychopathological elements which the director needs to be able to recognize. It will also deal with referral.

Learning Objectives

Students are expected to learn the history of and theology behind Spiritual Direction and also the basics of Spiritual Direction, namely, issues to be dealt with in Spiritual Direction, the relationship between director and directee, psychological dynamics in play in Spiritual Direction and how to deal with them, the relationship between Spiritual Direction and other helping skills such as Counselling and Psychotherapy, referrals.
