DESCRIPTION The purpose of ‘Proficiency in English’ is to create an awareness of the difficulties students encounter when communicating in English during their studies at university, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. It also aims to equip them with the necessary tools to improve their level of proficiency in the English language.

Study-unit Aims

The study-unit aims:
• to improve and consolidate accuracy and fluency in the English Language;
• to provide the opportunity to practise specific language skills while focusing on students’ needs;
• to provide students with language tools for becoming autonomous learners, able to identify their weaknesses and analyse their own work independently.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• demonstrate grammar accuracy;
• use self-study resources;
• have greater familiarity with academic vocabulary.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• possess self-awareness in English language usage;
• analyse, assess and edit writing tasks;
• acquire the necessary skills to carry out further English language study independently.
