TITLE English Speech Fluency

DESCRIPTION This study-unit builds on practical speech fluency exercises to help students gain better command of their English language speaking skills. The unit will emphasise practical training in speech fluency, followed up by language exercises designed to help students focus on formulating and organising their English speech patterns more coherently.

By the end of this study-unit, students will feel more confident and will have better control of their language when speaking in English in a variety of situations including during tutorials, asking/answering questions, delivering presentations and offering peer reviews, among others.

Study-unit Aims:

- To provide students with an opportunity to practise speaking in a non-challenging environment.
- To sensitise students to English speech patterns that involve a good grasp of rhythm, intonation and pronunciation, an understanding of language structure and also a range of vocabulary appropriate to academic study in this case.
- To provide students with a range of conversational tools and gambits that facilitate fluency.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- use a range of language features to converse more comfortably in English.
- understand a range of speech patterns that contribute to fluency.
- grasp a range of language structures, vocabulary and discourse features that contribute towards greater speech fluency.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- speak English fluently and confidently in a range of situations.
- apply controlled practice exercises in speech fluency to new situations encountered.
- organise and structure extended speeches coherently.
- apply similar organisation tactics also to certain types of written communication.
